How to get the most out of your candles!

If you've ever bought a candle, regardless of being handmade or store bought, and been less than impressed by its' performance, have you ever stopped and thought to yourself, "Am I doing something wrong?"

It sounds crazy, doesn't it? Find a match, light the wick and off you go! Nearly anyone can do that. However, you could actually be doing harm to your candles by not caring for them before, during and after their burn.

Before throwing them away, or making your mind up that they were made poorly, please read the helpful care tips below to try and save your candles, and prevent future disappointment!

BEFORE & AFTER BURNING.

To properly care for your candles, please keep them out of direct sunlight where they could either fade, begin to sweat/melt, and also keep them somewhere where they aren't likely to be knocked over and become a fire hazard. If a lid or dust cover is provided, make sure it is replaced between uses.

It is important to remember when you first light your candle that you make sure the wick is around 5-8mm above the surface of the wax, and after extinguishing it always trim the wick back down to this recommended length (once the wax has cooled and reset).

By routinely trimming your wicks after use, it will help create a perfect burn pool and your candle with give the best performance.

WHILST BURNING.

The burn pool (or melted wax) will create what is known as a "candle memory".

For your first burn, it is important to let this melt pool reach the width of the container so all subsequent burns will continue this pattern and burn evenly for the rest of the candle. If you extinguish the flame before it has created a full burn pool (aka, full diameter and approx. 1cm deep), you will find that your candle will "tunnel" its'way down in future burns, creating waste.

Avoid burning your candles for more than 4 hours at a time (if burn pool is reached within this time frame) and allow your candles to fully reset by returning to room temperature before relighting. Failure to do this is called "power burning"and your candles shall more than likely not perform to their very best, but shall also run the risk of overheating and of course they will be used up in no time as well.

It is strongly advised that you discontinue use when roughly 1cm of wax is left to prevent any accidents, such as burning surfaces or the glassware itself shattering due to overheating.

CANDLE SAFETY.

Every Wax & Lye candle comes with a safety warning label on the bottom of the glass, and/or a care card.

We have included a full copy of the standard warning label we use here too, in case you forget to read it before lighting your candle.

Never move a lit candle, or leave unattended.
Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Place candle on a stable, heat resistant surface.
Avoid exposure to draughts.
