The Quiet Side of Mother’s Day...

Mother’s Day is one of those days that can hold a lot of different emotions all at once.

For some people, it’s joyful and busy — flowers on the kitchen bench, handmade cards, family lunches, phone calls, noisy houses and full tables.

For others, it feels quieter.

Sometimes it’s a day of missing someone. Sometimes it’s complicated relationships, distance, grief, exhaustion, or simply the reminder that life hasn’t unfolded quite the way you expected it to.

And I think that’s something we don’t always talk about enough.

This year feels a little different for me personally, because it will be my first Mother’s Day without my Mum.

There’s something very strange about reaching for the phone before remembering you can’t. About noticing all the little things you normally would have shared without even thinking about it. Grief has a way of quietly sitting in the background of days like this, even when life continues moving around it.

There can be a lot of pressure around Mother’s Day to make everything feel perfect. Perfect gifts, perfect moments, perfect families. But real life is usually much softer and messier than that.

Personally, I’ve always found that scent has a way of holding memory unlike anything else. A particular fragrance can instantly take you somewhere familiar — a home, a season, a moment, or a person you haven’t thought about properly in years.

Sometimes comfort looks very small. A warm drink. A quiet house. A long shower at the end of the day. Lighting a candle in the evening and letting yourself stop rushing for a little while.

Those small rituals matter.

So whether Mother’s Day feels joyful, difficult, complicated, beautiful, lonely, comforting, or a mix of all of those things at once — I hope you’re gentle with yourself this month.

And if you are celebrating someone special this year, I hope you get the chance to slow down and enjoy those moments together, however simple they may be 🤍
