The Truth About Scented Candles: Why They’re Not All Bad...
Lately, it seems like every time you turn on the TV or scroll through social media, there’s a new warning about scented candles. From claims about harmful chemicals to accusations of environmental damage, it’s easy to feel like every flicker of a candle wick is a health hazard waiting to happen. But I’m here to tell you that, like anything, not all candles are created equal. In fact, when crafted with care and high-quality materials, scented candles can be an eco-friendly, safe, and indulgent part of your self-care routine!
As a maker of soy wax candles, I want to share why I stand behind the candles I create — and why they’re far from the toxic threat that some media outlets suggest.
1. Soy Wax is the Key to Eco-Friendly Candles
A lot of the concerns about candles stem from the materials used. Paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum, is often cited as harmful because it can release harmful chemicals when burned which have scientifically proven health risks attached to it. But here’s the good news: I only use 100% natural soy wax in my candles (and occasionally locally sourced beeswax which is also 100% natural), which is also a renewable, biodegradable resource, making it a better option for the planet. It also burns cleaner, producing far less soot and lessening the impact on indoor air quality. Plus, soy wax burns slower than other waxes, meaning you get more hours of enjoyment from each candle!
2. Phthalate-Free Fragrances Are a Must
Some scented candles on the market use fragrances that contain phthalates, which have been linked to health issues like hormone disruption. I understand why this would raise concerns, but I want to reassure you that my candles are made with only phthalate-free fragrances. This means you can enjoy a lovely scent without the risk of exposure to harmful chemicals. The goal is to create a soothing atmosphere, not add to your worries!
3. Cotton Wicks: Clean and Safe
Wicks are another important element of candle safety, and the wrong kind of wick can contribute to excessive soot and other issues. That’s why I choose to use cotton wicks in all of my candles. Cotton wicks are a cleaner burning option, helping to ensure a steady, low-maintenance flame. They are free of harmful metals like lead, which were once found in some older wicks.
4. Moderation and Ventilation Matter
Like with anything in life, moderation is key. Whether you're a self proclaimed "power burner" or only use the occasional scented candle, when used properly in a well-ventilated space, burning soy wax candles is not a health hazard. Make sure your room has enough airflow, and avoid burning candles for prolonged periods of time without a break, and always read the warning label at the base of the candle before lighting - This goes for any type of candle, not just the fragrant ones!
5. Candles Are About Enjoyment, Not Harm
I believe candles should be a source of relaxation and enjoyment. Whether you're winding down after a long day or setting a cozy mood for a dinner party, scented candles can enhance your environment in a way that few other products can. When made responsibly, with quality ingredients, candles can be a safe, delightful addition to your home.
So, before you write off all scented candles as "bad" just because the TV tells you so, why not ask an experienced candle maker first and take a closer look at what actually goes into your handmade candles, you might be surprised at how safe and eco-friendly a well-crafted candle can be (as opposed to cheaper, mass produced options found in the shops where the poor retail worker might have no idea what you're actually talking about!)
